b"The next decade saw a huge culturalshift in the way Johnsons worked. Changeis not necessarily a bad thing, but in thiscase, change came in the wake of tragedy.In 2011 and 2012, two industrial accidents occurred in the space of ten months,resulting in the tragic death of twoJohnsons employees. Wed had minor incidents before, but never any fatalities. So for this to happen, it sort of finished my career, says Denis, who retired within a year or two of the accidents. Mark Johnson remembers how hard itwasnot just for Johnsons, but the whole community. It was tragic. Were very focused on the community, and to have these incidents occur, it really hit hard. Its something theyve worked hard onsince thensafety first. First came structural changes to put a daily focus on health and safety. New positions were created and there was a great deal of training for all staff and management. Over the following years, Johnson's engaged with safety training professionals, raised standards and identified hazards before they became incidents.'Through training and discipline, we changed our culture so that safety is seen as something we just do,' says Andrew Hayward.
